The GPS or Global Positioning System, has become a popular way to find your way around areas that you are not familiar with. Many have found the benefits of having a GPS unit speak directions to them as they drive through strange territory. This is a major improvement to flipping through pages of the street directory as the road you are travelling on goes from map 123 to map 134.
However, you do need to keep the maps software up to date to ensure that new roads and any other changes are reflected in the directions you are given by your GPS. Luckily this is a relatively simple and straightforward process. I will guide you through the map update procedure for the Garmin GPS.
The Garmin City Navigator for cars, updates their map software on a yearly basis. Follow these steps and you should have your Garmin GPS maps updated in no time.
Go to the Garmin site and go to the Map and Chart Products page. Click on the Update Your Maps link, which you will find part way down this page. At this stage you will be asked to either connect your GPS to the computer by the USB cord, or you can just enter the Garmin GPS serial number. You will have to have registered your GPS to download the maps, which you can do now if required.
Next you will be provided information about the available updates. If you need to download a maps update for your Garmin GPS, you can either order a DVD or download direct to your computer. The choice is yours. If you have time, you may be able to purchase the updates from retailers for a cheaper price. There are two things to remember when buying an update by disk. Look for the word Update on the disk. Secondly, you can get a pc of mac version.
